Hollywood lost an amazing and legendary actor yesterday as Pete Postlethwaite died at age 64. You may not recognize his name but trust me when you read his biography and check out the photos and video of him you will realize just what a talent was lost.

Pete Postlethwaite

He was known as a character actor or a supporting actor but whatever you called him you could be certain Pete Postlethwaite was a valued member of the entertainment industry. The unbelievably talented actor lost his long battle with cancer yesterday.

Peter was a distinguished man to say the least but it was his prominent, bony cheeks and rawboned figure that made him the perfect supporting actor. The British born Postlethwaite developed the acting bug during his college years, much to the dismay of his father, who was a laborer and wanted him to have a more stable profession. He gained experience via the stage in Britain. Pete’s first big film role was the British film Distant Voices, Still Lives where he played a wife abuser, a role that earned him big raves and paved the way for his Hollywood success. Playing the role of Daniel Day-Lewis’s father in the big screen movie In the Name of the Father earned him an Oscar nod, you can see a video clip from that performance below.

During his career Postlethwaite earned the praises of many of Hollywood’s elite including Steven Speilberg who referred to him as ‘the best actor in the world today’. Steven and Pete worked together on The Lost World: Jurrassic Park and Amistad. I for one loved him best in The Usual Suspects and The Town. The latter performance left me chilled it was so good.

Pete Postlethwaite was a real and rare actor whose talent was immeasurable. However he was much more than that. Pete was also a political activist, especially when it came to climate change and the environment. In 2009 he famously rode a bike to the London premiere of his movie The Age of Stupid. Postlethwaite marched against the war in Iraq as well as was a big advocate for the Make Poverty History campaign. Most of all Pete was a loving husband and father. He was married to wife Jacqueline since 1987 and they have two children. Our thoughts go out to his family.
