David Paterson: Saturday Night Live Redemption!

September 27, 2010

A surprise appearance was the highlight of the SNL night for the often mocked New York Governor David Paterson. Saturday Night Live kicked off its 36th season yesterday, and you can credit the NY Governor for sticking it to the SNL producers and getting the loudest laughs along the way. In an action-packed night headlined by Amy Poehler hosting and Katy Perry singing, it was a skit involving the NY Gov and his imitator Fred Armisen that stole the show. As Armisen set up for a seemingly standard parody of the partially-blind NY politician, the crowd cheered as the real governor rolled into the picture on an office chair, and sat right next to him.

“Ladies and gentleman, I wanted to come here tonight before my time as governor of the great state of New York ends to tell you that working in Albany is just like watching ‘Saturday Night Live,'” the governor said. “There are a lot of characters. It’s funny for 10 minutes, and then you just want it to be over,” prompting raucous laughter.

Armisen typically plays on the governor’s propensity to slander New Jersey, and has even joked about his blindness by running into things on set. For a minute, it seemed that David Paterson’s Saturday Night Live appearance would take an awkwardly serious turn.

“Jokes that degrade people solely for the fact that they have disabilities are sophomoric and stupid,” said the governor, prompting an apology from Seth Meyers. But, thankfully, it turned out he was just lining up his next joke.

“You should be sorry. You have poked so much fun at me for being blind that I forgot I was black.”

You have to give the man props! Harshly criticizing the comedy show over the years, he finally realized that if you can’t beat them, join them. He even managed to squeeze in a jibe to his often slandered neighboring state.

“Just by my sense of smell, I can tell that there are 15 people in this audience from New Jersey,” drawing boisterous laughter.

The night also saw Katy Perry getting her own back for her Sesame Street censorship, and a photo-worthy moment of Justin Timeberlake locking lips with Amy Poelher, just before gagging and calling her a “terrible kisser!” If you missed it, you’ve got a lot of highlight videos to watch.
