Jackie Burroughs Dies At Age 71

September 24, 2010

Canada’s leading lady succumbed to stomach cancer yesterday at age 71. The life-long actress was known best for her acclaimed role as the sarcastic but sympathetic “Hetty” King in the Emmy award winning show “Road to Avonlea.” Find out more about this beloved actress, plus photos and video of her celebrated life below!

She’s second from the right in the above photo. Born in the United Kingdom in 1939, her family moved to Canada while she was just 12. Seemingly talented from birth, she began acting in live theatre and officially began her acting career in 1966.

Fittingly, Jackie Borroughs dies 20 years after her most popular role began. In “Road to Avonlea,” which aired in Canada and the U.S. from 1990 to 1996, her role as tough love master “Hetty” is a fond memoryfor the generation growing up in the 90’s.

“She’s the greatest to work with,” said Avonela co-star Zachary Bennett to The Star. “She’s got a split personality. She’s this fearless actor and she’s a slacker college guy. Felix and Aunt Hetty would have belching contests and trade fart jokes. I couldn’t keep up with her.”

However, you may also picture her from small parts in The Twilight Zone (Many, Many Monkeys), 1985 classic “Anne of Green Gables,” and “Smallville” (Hourglass). She even appeared recently on the big screen in box office hits “Fever Pitch,” and “The Sentinel.” But her most successful role was Maryse Holder in “A Winter Tan,” for which she received a Genie award.

TV and videos aside, most close to her say she’ll be remembered for is her larger than life personality. Comedian Rick Mercer had her on his sitcom ,”Made in Canada,” in 2003.

“The whole time she was on set I couldn’t quite believe it was happening,” he said. “She told me a lot of great stories while we were waiting around. And then when the camera came on, she took the Mickey out of herself.”

Receiving a lifetime achievement award in 2005, the 71-year-old actress will certainly be missed. What do you think of the news the Jackie Burroughs dies at 71? Did you grow up watching “Hetty”?
