Ayi Jihu: Chinese ‘Madonna’ (Video)

September 10, 2010

Ayi Jihu is being called the Chinese ‘Madonna’ after a sudden rush to fame has left her a superstar. Learn more about her here, and see some photos and video below.

Ayi Jihu

From slogging through a sink full of nasty dishes, to bringing crowds to their feet—it’s any aspiring performer’s dream. But just how did she get her big break?

Ayi Jihu used to break her back as a dishwasher at her parent’s Chinese take-out restaurant in England:

“Washing up was such hard work. I had to work every weekend to get some pocket money.”

Her talent couldn’t be bottled up, though, and she would often find herself entertaining the customers:

“I used to sing and dance for the customers. It’s all I ever wanted to do and got me out of the kitchen for a short while. This is where it all started…”

But now she has a plaque commemorating over 100 million downloads of her first record. It all started when she made an appearance as an extra in a video for a rapper named Fugitive. After laying eyes on her, record execs soon decided to make her the main focal point of the video.

She was eventually offered her very own record deal with Shlepp Records out of London. It was then that she would be flown back to her native China, and eventually catapulted into international stardom.

Jihu has been met with mixed reactions in China, where the communist government apparently frowns upon her breed of risqué performances. That doesn’t stop eager fans from approaching her. Some are so overzealous that she has to watch herself in public:

“People in my family’s home town in China get very excited if they see me. I’m quite careful not to go out alone as I can’t really walk the streets.”

I wonder if she’ll make it big here in the United States?
