Steven Slater, Miffed Flight Attendant Eyes Plea Deal

September 7, 2010

Steven Slater, the saucy JetBlue flight attendant who became an overnight star continues to work on the details of a possible plea deal. Some say the agreement may include a mental health provision. Get the update here, and check out photos and video below.

Mr. Slater and his attorney appeared in Queens, NY Supreme Court this morning for a short hearing stemming from his buffoonery several weeks ago. As the former flight attendant faces a potential jail stint for trespassing, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, his lawyer seemed poised to strike a plea deal.

Slater did not enter a plea this morning. Instead, observers note, it appears his lawyer, Daniel Horowitz, will attempt to work out an agreement. He said:

“We’re looking for as favorable a disposition for Mr. Slater as we can…”

TMZ reports that the agreement could include a mental health evaluation and possible treatment. They claim the DA confirmed that they are “evaluating” him for any potential psychological issues, including “work stress, drugs and alcohol and more.”

The NY Daily News reported a similar finding, saying that Queens DA Richard Brown seems willing to evaluate Steven Slater to see if he may be eligible for an “alternative sentencing program.”

Regardless, prosecutors don’t plan to simply brush off the dangerous nature of what Slater is accused of doing. They point to the potential risk of injury that the passengers may have been exposed to as a result of the emergency chute deployment:

“We continue to focus on the seriousness of the acts of the defendant…”

Meanwhile reports have surfaced about potential movie and book deals for Slater, who has recently lost some of the buzz he once had. Statements made by some of the passengers told a different side of the melee that didn’t exactly paint Slater as the folk hero the media fell in love with.

I still love the guy.
