September 6, 2010

Shiva Nazar-Ahari is on trial for a crime that could land her the death penalty if she is found guilty in her country. So what is this Iranian human rights activist being accused of? Many of her supporters are saying that the charges are bogus and that Shiva is not only courageous but a champion. Read more about her trial and see photos here.

Twenty-six year old Shiva Nazar-Ahari has gotten herself into a world of trouble, but she is no stranger to getting in trouble with the law in her country. But in a world where there is no freedom of speech, many would beg to differ that Shiva is a trouble-maker but rather a human champion of human rights.

According to lawyer Mohammad Sharif, Nazar-Ahari is on trial “on charges of Moharebeh (warring against God), conspiring and gathering to commit a crime, propaganda against the regime and harming public order. After presenting the last defense, the end of the trial was declared. We are awaiting the verdict and I am not pessimistic about the fate of the case.”

So what will happen to Shiva? Time will surely tell.

Back in June of 2009, Shiva was arrested right after the Iranian presidential election after protests. She served just three months in jail, but returned behind bars back in December.

Since the controversial election of 2009, Shiva was not the only individual to be arrested. Many protesters were handcuffed after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in what many felt was a “rigged” election win.

The website of Mir Hossein Mousavi called is saying that Shiva was also being charged for going against the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran (PMOI). The site explains, “In the court, she expressed repulsion at this organization (PMOI), denied any links with them and dismissed the accusation as completely baseless.”

Unfortunately at least ten other individuals have been given death sentences due to their protests.

What do you think of Shiva Nazar Ahari? Is she a heroine?

Here is hoping she doesn’t get the death penalty. How scary to live where you can’t speak your mind. Good for her though for speaking her mind.
